I'd been very much into pop/soul/funk and still enjoy playing those records that I had back then, but after stalling for months, I took the bold step and bought things like Foxtrot by Genesis, compilations of Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and The Who, Dark Side Of The Moon, Hotel California and of course, this. I was finding less and less 'new' stuff to love. I had got very dissatisfied with contemporary chart music, feeling it had gone very 'synthetic' by that time, when I'd still been buying a lot of singles, LPs, cassettes and more recently CDs that were then new releases.

I already had been playing Cream's Disraeli Gears and The Cream Of Eric Clapton loads (I discovered the former via the latter one there) and so was 'primed' for it quite nicely. I'd not been playing guitar for more than a few months and was getting into blues - listening to a bit of BB King and Robert Cray that an elder brother had in his collection. How did I 'discover' Jimi and this album? It was in 1988 (Spring or Summer - not sure) and I was 18 - a workmate had been 'on at me' that I should give him a try. This also will coincide (roughly) with my 30th anniversary of hearing and owning the album!! I've said this many times but am happy to say it again and this is the most appropriate place for it. So I am VERY, VERY excited about this thread.
